Garvan is situated at the base of the Ardnamurchan & Morvern Peninsulas just off the Road to the Isles, the mystical journey from Fort William to Mallaig either by road or on the West Highland Railway Line. In summer, a steam train runs and it can viewed from the Croft House as in puffs along the north shore of Loch Eil.

At Glenfinnan there is a monument of Bonnie Prince Charlie, the railway viaduct built by 'Concrete Bob McAlpine' (as seen in the Harry Potter films), a National Trust for Scotland visitor centre and boat cruises on Loch Shiel.

Morar is famous for its white sands and close by is Camusdarach beach which was used as a setting in the film Local Hero; the beach overlooks the Small Isles.

At the end of the West Highland Line is Mallaig which is the ferry port for the Isle of Skye, the other route to Skye is via Kyle of Lochalsh across the famous Skye Bridge passing Loch Lochy, Loch Cluanie and Eilean Donan Castle.

To the north east is Loch Ness home of Nessie the famous monster. On the shore of the loch lies the ruins of Urquhart Castle. A short distance from Loch Ness is Inverness, capital of the Highlands with air links to the south.

To the south of Fort William there are two routes available, one is to the ferry port of Oban with ferries running to the Inner and Outer Hebrides. The other route is through Glencoe across Rannoch Moor to the Central Belt of Scotland.
